It's Working Project

"Once we came up with an idea that was inspired by our first son, we were excited to take the opportunity not only just for us now, but for our newest addition to the family."

What is one piece of advice you wish you could offer your former expectant self?

Do what works for you! No one knows the intricacies of your family but yourself and those in it. That includes how your life functions and how it runs. It’s the same way that every pregnancy is different, and every birth story is different. That is just the beginning of the journey. So family balance and work will fit when you tell yourself, “this is what works for me and my family.” Take ownership and be proud of that decision.

FOR MOMS: If you breastfed, was there a place for you to pump that met your needs and was conducive to your success? If you breastfed, how did you decide to continue? FOR DADS: What, if any, adjustments did you (or your workplace) make to your schedule after having a baby? Was it specific to your manager or larger, whole work culture?

Definitely needed to pump. Pumping gave me the freedom to allow others to help me with my children and allowed me to do other activities. Once my husband got me the “hands free” bra for pumping, it was a lifesaver. I don’t know if I would say it was easy, but somehow pumping fell into place with our schedule.

What was your biggest challenge going back to work?

In hindsight, it was taking care of myself first. Once my children came, it was all about them first and my husband, and then the business. I got to a point where I was so exhausted, and I realized I wasn’t taking care of me. Once I put in time for me- eating better and starting to exercise again, it has been the base of who I am and it supports me in doing everything else- being a wife, mother, and business owner.

Who was your biggest source of support in returning to work? What was your biggest pregnancy indulgence?

We are lucky to have a great support system around us! I have my mother in law that helps me with our children. Secondly, when my children were ready for interaction with other kids, the information showed up and we were lucky to find amazing schools near our area. I have a business coach that supports me in all aspects of my business. And since I am my own boss, I think this is even more invaluable to keep me accountable of my goals and progress.
